There is no such thing as perfect attribution. But there is a usable standard: First-Click over 30 days, clean UTMs, and the courage to calculate against yourself if in doubt.
Attribution is impossible, yet necessary
No attribution model is true. Every customer has multiple touchpoints, many of which are immeasurable, and the rest are imprecise. Anyone who wants attribution accurate to two decimal places has misunderstood the problem.
Nevertheless, we need an attribution, otherwise, we don't know what works. The pragmatic way in everyday SME life: a simple model, consistently applied, honestly interpreted.
Our Standard
First-Click attribution with a 30-day window. This means: whoever first brought the customer into our ecosystem gets the attribution if a purchase or inquiry occurs within 30 days. UTM parameters on every link we set, no exceptions. Google Analytics 4 or Matomo as the central source, Shopify or CRM as the revenue source.
Important: this model has systematic errors. It underestimates retargeting, overestimates organic traffic, and ignores offline contacts. We know this and honestly account for it.
What makes First-Click better than Last-Click
Last-Click attribution favors the channel that happens to be closest to the purchase. This is usually Google Search, often with the brand name. The user already knows they want to buy and types "Company name". Last-Click then gives full attribution to Google Search, even though the customer learned about the company through Instagram, a newsletter, or word-of-mouth.
First-Click is also not perfect, but it shifts attention to the channel that creates reach. For growth, this is the more relevant focus.
The courage to calculate against yourself
We run Meta-Ads for our clients. We have an interest in Meta-Ads looking good. Nevertheless, we calculate conservatively: we don't count view-through conversions, we only use click-based attribution, we compare Meta reports with Shopify or CRM revenue and honestly report discrepancies.
If Meta says we generated CHF 40,000 in revenue, and it's CHF 28,000 in Shopify, then it's CHF 28,000. We used to argue about this. Now we accept it. Customers pay us for the actual impact, not for platform reporting.
What every SME should do
Firstly: UTMs on all external links, including their own social media posts, newsletters, and signatures. Secondly: a central attribution model (First-Click or Last-Click, but consistently applied) and reporting that is comparable across all channels. Thirdly: once a quarter, reconcile platform reports (Meta, Google, TikTok) with actual revenue from Shopify or CRM. The difference is the honest basis.
